Link Love Friday

This has not been a great week, and it’s all my fault. I know how to manage my stress levels and what I need to do to help maintain that optimistic outlook of mine, and I’ve been letting things slip. It happens to everyone, I guess. But I’m determined to get back to the positive mindset I had at the beginning of the week, and it starts with being grateful that today is Friday (instead of wishing today was Saturday). And I have some great, happy links to share, so that helps, too.

Video: The Story of Cosmetics

I’m not sure how it’s taken me so long to discover this video, created by The Story of Stuff Project in partnership with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics last year, but it’s really great. It explains in a clear way why it’s so important to read the ingredients labels on your beauty products (and to know which chemicals are best avoided).

If you have friends or family like mine who are skeptical of natural beauty products—whether it’s because they worry that natural products won’t be as effective (Natural Beauty Myth #2) or because they assume the products they’re already using are safe—this video would be a great way to explain your point of view.

Honestly, I’m curious—do you have friends and family who think using natural or organic products is ridiculous? I know I’ve created a few converts over the past few years, but plenty of my friends and family have been immune to my soapbox chatter thus far…please tell me I’m not the only one! —Aleigh

Link Love Friday: Slow Hair!

Slow Hair from Jacob Breinholt on Vimeo.

This week, everyone’s been talking about groundbreaking topics like the East Coast earthquake (literally earth-shattering!) and Steve Jobs leaving Apple. Meanwhile, I’ve been writing about Pantone’s fall color predictions, my latest roundup for Breathe, easing into fall and what a year’s worth of beauty looks like. But here’s what I’ve been reading+enjoying elsewhere:

  • Sarah from Whoorl shared the amazing video above from Hairdresser on Fire, and I’m a little obsessed with it. I think I’ve watched it about 10 times. Isn’t it amazing?
  • Mkokopelli offered some good advice about how to get started on an eco-friendly lifestyle. I have some new apps to download…
  • Paige Padgett shared Elle’s list of top green celebrities. (Another reason to love Salma Hayek!)
  • The lovely ladies at Fig and Sage reviewed Rebel & Mercury 100% Natural Botanical Perfume, which I would definitely love to try.

What are you reading+enjoying this week?

PS: In case you missed it, here’s what I was reading+enjoying last week.

A year’s worth of beauty…in a day

This video generated a lot of conversation when it first came out in June, but I thought it was worth sharing here. In it, Dutch artists Lernert and Sander apply a year’s worth of makeup in one sitting to Belgian model Hannelore Knuts. (Find out more about the video and how it was made.)

When you consider that most of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your body, and then look at how much stuff you can put on just your face over the course of a year…does watching this make you re-think what you put on your body every day?
