Beauty Obsession: CV Skinlabs

I don’t frequently have issues with dry skin (except maybe on my feet). But this time of year my skin is definitely at its driest, and I find myself slathering on an extra-soothing facial moisturizer at night, a more generous amount of body oil post-shower or bath, and taking extra care of my lips so they don’t become chapped or parched (the horror!).

There are two new-to-me products that have been helpful in this year’s Operation Stay Moisturized that I want to share with you. Both are from CV Skinlabs*, Britta Aragon’s line of soothing products—the entire line is good for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

What I tried: Calming Moisture, $49 and Restorative Skin Balm, $26

First impressions: I went for the Restorative Skin Balm first. It’s very emollient and instantly soothing, perfect for dry skin on feet, elbows, and knees—but with CV Skinlabs signature blend of turmeric, bisabolol and reishi mushroom, plus carnauba and beeswax, it’s also a great healing salve for cuts and scrapes. Just put a dab on your skin and top with a bandage! I’ve also used it on my lips, on a stubborn patch of dry skin on my palm, and on my ankles. And I’m pretty sure there are many more uses for me to discover.

What caught me by surprise: I tend to shy away from using products on my face that are meant for dry skin, since my face tends to be on the oily side, which made me a little nervous about testing out CV Skinlabs’ Calming Moisture. But I’ve been surprised by how my skin responds to this product. It’s strong enough to be a good option for skin that’s raw or healing from a chemical peel, but it’s also gentle enough to moisturize my skin without causing breakouts or leaving my skin looking dull.

Bonus: Lately I’ve been wondering if it’s time for me to start thinking seriously about adding some anti-aging products to my routine (wrinkles, boo!), but finding a product like this that’s lightly moisturizing and contains ingredients like beta glucan, which helps promote collagen production, has made me re-think my need for a dedicated anti-aging product in favor of multi-taskers like these two.

Have you tried anything from the CV Skinlabs line? What do you look for in a moisturizer this time of year? —Aleigh

Indigo+Canary’s 12 Most Popular Posts Of 2012

This image doesn't have anything to do with this post...but I think it's hilarious. Don't you?

The end of 2012 is approaching, and once again, I’m looking forward to a new year that’s fresh with promise. I’m not one who believes the world is going to end this Friday, obviously! But I wanted to take a moment to look back at your favorite posts* of the year. Here they are, in all of their glory. Enjoy!

Dry Brushing to Detox Your Skin. I am still doing this most days, and I still adore how invigorating—and exfoliating—this daily treatment is.

Get Shiny, Glossy Hair—Naturally. I wrote this story for Breathe magazine; Julie Ebner offered some great, natural tips!

Natural Beauty Q&A with Michelle Witherby. She’s the founder of O&N Collective, and has great advice. She shares her comprehensive approach to natural beauty (and health), and a few of her must-have products.

Your Questions Answered: Laser Hair Removal. I had laser hair removal every six weeks for nearly a year…and answered your questions based on what I learned (and from asking my technician).

Natural Beauty Q&A with Sally Biondo. She’s a fantastic, all-natural makeup artist, and shared her beauty philosophy, her must-have products, and the one bad beauty habit she encourages everyone to break!

Natural Beauty Q&A with Karen Behnke. The founder of Juice Beauty told us about her path to natural beauty and offered some juicy inspiration.

Reader Question: Battling Hormonal Acne. Unfortunately, hormonal acne is something I continue to battle—and I offered up some techniques that can work on just about any type of skin that’s battling a hormonal acne invasion.

Sustainable (and natural) beauty. This story I wrote for Breathe features six natural beauty companies that take a commitment to Mother Nature very seriously.

Let’s talk about: Eyebrow threading. Threading is my preferred method of brow shaping and one of my favorite beauty treatments for a few reasons: it’s affordable, it’s quick, it’s (almost) painless, and it’s natural.

8 Leaps to Take in Your Beauty Routine. For Leap Day, I put together a special list of beauty “leaps” to try in its honor.

Roundup: Green Tea for Beautiful Skin. As an ingredient packed with antioxidants, green tea has taken the natural beauty scene by storm. And since the polyphenol in green tea, ECGC, has been proven to help rejuvenate and heal skin, fight inflammation, and heal acne, I put together a long list of products that include it.

How do you clean your yoga mat? I sought your advice for this post—and I’m so glad I did! There are some really great suggestions in the comments.

Did you have a favorite Indigo+Canary post this year? Any requests for 2013? —Aleigh

*This list doesn’t include any product reviews—I’ll tackle those in another post.

Beauty Obsession: Athlete’s Secret Combo Pack

This special Moksa combo pack from O&N Collective arrived* at the perfect time. It was a Wednesday, and I’d just gotten home from an all-day photo shoot for one of the magazines I edit. I’d spent the whole day on my feet, running around, carrying furniture, loading and unloading, and I was hot, sunburnt, and tired. My feet hurt and my knees, which bother me sometimes (a remnant from running track years ago), throbbed. I was so excited to spot the box from O&N Collective on my porch when I got home!

What I tried: Moksa Athlete’s Secret Combo Pack, $22.50.

First impressions: After such a long, active day, all I wanted was a long shower, so I went straight for the Kona Body Bar. It has tiny nibs mixed in with its organic olive, coconut, soybean, hemp, and castor oils for a touch of exfoliation that feels more like a massage than a scrub—and instead of that squeaky, dry skin feeling that sometimes comes from a bar of soap, it leaves your skin feeling moisturized.

What caught me by surprise: The texture of the Moksa Body Butter! It’s less like butter and more like a light (solid) foam. A tiny amount warms in your hand and turns into a smooth rub. Instead of the typical sports rubs out there that are full of petroleum-based ingredients (yuck), this stuff is made with shea butter, jojoba oil, sunflower seed oil, sweet almond oil, essential oils, and arrowroot powder. I rubbed it on my (sore) knees and feet, and it pleasantly warmed and soothed them both. By the time my husband got home, I was sprawled out on the couch, feet up, sighing happily.

Bonus: So many! The ingredients are 97% USDA-certified organic. The fair trade shea butter comes from a women’s cooperative in Nigeria. Both products are 100% vegan and cruelty-free, with no synthetics or chemicals. The body butter comes packaged in plastic-free, recycled glass, and the soap is packaged in a 100% post-consumer waste label printed with soy ink.

Bottom line? Whether you’re a marathoner or tackling a marathon workday, there’s plenty to love about this little combo pack. What’s your secret for recuperating after a hard workout or workday? —Aleigh

*Disclosure: This sample was sent to me for review, but I only write about the products that I think are truly worthy of being shared with you. View my full disclosure here.

3 Free Natural Beauty Smartphone Apps

For the most part, the natural beauty world is pretty low-tech. But I’ve been keeping an eye out for some share-worthy smartphone apps, and today I have three to share! Do you have a go-to smartphone app for natural and organic beauty? —Aleigh

O&N Collective

In addition to a bunch of other features (like an in-app store that’s supposed to launch soon), this brand new app’s Toxins List tool offers a pretty comprehensive list of ingredients to avoid in both personal care products and household products. Overwhelmed by trying to keep track of the icky ingredients you want to stay away from? Just break out your smartphone and check the Toxins List. You’ll find common uses for each ingredient and their related concerns—making it much easier for you to decide on the spot if a product contains ingredients you can live with, or if you should leave it on the shelf. Available for iPhone or Android.

Organic Spa Skin Guide

The app from Organic Spa magazine, this Skin Guide offers a massive list of natural and organic cosmetics companies. It hasn’t been updated for 2012, but it’s still a great way to discover new natural and organic companies and their product lines. You can also mark your favorites for easy reference. This one seems to only be available for iPhone.

Organic Beauty

If you’re a DIYer, snap up this app for tons of skincare recipes, and even a few health remedies, like a headache fix with ginger juice—straight from your smartphone. Recipes are easy to share via email, Facebook, and Twitter. Download for iPhone.
