Natural Beauty Faves: January 2012

It’s taking me a while to get adjusted to the fact that 2012 is really here, but I have some big plans. First up, a new email newsletter! I’m not planning to launch it for a few weeks yet, but if you’re interested in the newsletter-only goodies I have planned, you can go ahead and sign up here. Here are the products I’m loving this month:

  • Florere Deodorant Cream. I raved about this stuff a little while ago and I’m still loving it. My mom and sister both took it for a whirl while I was in Pittsburgh over the holidays, and I think they were both impressed.
  • Hydrea London FSC Certified Classic Long Handle Body Brush. This was a Christmas present from my Aunt Jackie (thank you!). I’d been meaning to try the dry brushing technique I’ve been reading so much about, and so far I’m liking it but it’s too soon to tell much of a difference aside from feeling really invigorated. More on this brush (and the technique) soon…
  • Broo Shampoo & Conditioner. I just discovered this craft beer body care and shampoo line (it’s straight from Asheville, one of my hometowns), and so far I really like it. It’s not cheap, but the shampoo is so foamy that I really only need a tiny amount, and it’s super moisturizing. Look for a full review of this little hoppy duo soon!
  • 100% Pure Red Wine Resveratrol Eye Cream. I bought this at Ecolicious when I bought the Florere Deodorant Cream. With my (genetic) dark undereye circles, I’m always on the hunt for a new eye cream to try, and I really think the price is affordable for a quality eye cream, especially for such a large container. Plus, in addition to resveratrol (the age-defying substance in red wine grapes), it has hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and tons of antioxidants.

Natural Beauty Faves: December 2011

Is someone playing a practical joke on me? How is it already December?! This month is shaping up to be super busy and super fun—but I think I’m going to need a big nap on New Year’s Day. Here are the products I’m loving this month. They’ll be over in the sidebar all month long.

  • Alima Pure Organic Nourishing Lipbalm. I may have a lip balm and gloss obsession: Right now there are no less than six different kinds in my purse! I couldn’t resist buying one after including it in the Indigo+Canary Holiday Gift Guide. It’s definitely a balm and not a gloss, but it’s also super emollient and gives my lips more protection than a gloss, which is especially important when it’s cold outside. (I have the Holly Berry shade.)
  • Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil. This is the magical oil that makes Trilogy so products so amazing, all by itself. My skin has been freaking out a little bit lately, so I’ve been using my rosehip oil as an ultra-healing facial moisturizer in combination with my Una Biologicals Luxe Face Cream, and I’m already seeing a difference. It’s also perfect for helping to fade scars and stretch marks, and I wish I’d taken before pictures, because I could swear the little crow’s feet around my eyes are starting to lessen.
  • Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Jumbo Lash Mascara. This mascara has been my go-to for the past few weeks—I decided to try it once I ran out of the not-very-natural mascara I needed to use up. (Yep. I’m not perfect when it comes to using all-clean products, especially when I receive them as gifts.) Mascara is the one product I rarely go without—so I headed to the drug store hoping to find something in the passable category, and came home with this. It’s affordable, easy to find, and gets the job done. I think the tube is cute, but the one thing I would change is the leaf-shaped handle…it can be a little tricky to hold on to.
  • Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. I finally had a chance to try out Julie’s apple cider vinegar rinse trick, and it works! My hair smelled a little vinegar-y when it was wet, but as soon as it dried, the vinegar smell disappeared and my hair was definitely shinier.

Natural Beauty Faves: November 2011

I’m so happy November is here! I’m already planning my Thanksgiving Day menu (have I mentioned that I love to cook?) and all of the leftover inventions that go along with a massive holiday meal. Yum. November, I love you! And speaking of love, there’s a new batch of favorite products on my sidebar that I’m excited to share with you:

    • Una Biologicals Luxe Face Cream. I’ve written about this magical little face cream before, but I can’t say enough about it. The ingredients are really pure, it’s super emollient and just a little dab will keep your whole face moisturized and smooth. It’s too heavy for me in the summer (except in the undereye area, where I’ve used this with great results), but in the wintertime, my skin just drinks this stuff up. My husband pointed out a few days ago that after I apply this stuff, I always make a really big happy sigh. Simply put? It feels good.
    • Shea Moisture Lavender and Wild Orchid Body Oil. I’ve stopped using body lotion entirely in favor of body oil—and this stuff, which I discovered at my local Target, is my latest favorite. It’s not expensive, it has lovely ingredients and it keeps my legs and feet and elbows from getting dry. (I’m planning to write a Beauty Obsession post about this lovely little oil and how I use it instead of body lotion. Stay tuned.)
    • Dr. Hauschka Hand Cream. I can’t believe this hand cream hasn’t made my list until now—it was one of the first natural products I tried, and I was amazed. It’s perfect for anyone who works at a computer all day, because it doesn’t leave your hands feeling greasy or slippery, so you can use a dab (a pea-sized amount is all you need), rub it into your hands, and then get right back to tapping away on your keyboard. It’s on the pricier side at $24.95, but it lasts a really long time, and it’s on sale right now for $19.96. I’m definitely going to snap up a new bottle…
    • Mommy-to-be Milk Bath. OK, so…I’m not a mommy or a mommy-to-be, but I do love my big jacuzzi tub—and I also love a good milk bath. This USDA certified organic milk bath comes in a powder with essential oils of lavender, lemon and sandalwood that dissolves in warm water…ahhhh.

Natural Beauty Faves: October 2011

Welcome, October! This month I’m looking forward to nights spent around the fire pit, pumpkin everything (including DIY beauty…more on that later!) and lots of yummy soups and stews. This might just be my favorite month of the year. And while we’re talking about favorites, there’s a new batch of favorite products in my sidebar! Here’s what I’m loving this month:

  • John Masters Organics Lavender Rosemary Shampoo. I’m a big fan of John Masters products, especially the hair products. This shampoo is gentle and deliciously earthy-smelling. This is what I used (along with the matching conditioner) when I transitioned to natural hair care.
  • Juice Beauty Tinted Moisturizer. This tinted moisturizer was one of the first natural products I tried. (Not a bad first choice!) I like the consistency and that it offers exactly the right amount of coverage to even out your complexion.
  • NOe Cosmetics Deep Moisturizing Night Cream. I don’t have the right skin for this night cream (my skin is too oily), so I had a friend test it. She likes that it’s lightweight but super hydrating: a good option when cooler temperatures dry out your skin.
  • Dermablend Professional makeup brushes. After test-driving Dermablend Professional’s makeup brushes, I’m a convert to synthetic bristles. Unlike animal hair brushes (which can also irritate sensitive skin), synthetic bristles are cruelty-free and more easily cleaned. They’re top quality brushes (I feel like a pro with them in my makeup bag!), and are made from recycled aluminum and black bamboo. Plus they come in a cute reusable pouch made from recycled cotton.

Natural Beauty Faves: September 2011

Welcome, September! A new month, a new list of favorites to share. Here are the four products I’m enjoying right this very moment. (You’ll find them in the sidebar all month long.)

  •  Trilogy Everything Balm. I’ve swooned over Trilogy before, but truthfully, their Everything Balm is the reason I fell in love with them. It’s the ultimate multitasker–use it on your driest skin, massage it into your baby’s delicate skin (it’s very gentle) or even rub it into your lips. I love it for elbows and feet.
  • Collective Wellbeing Dry Skin Relief Body Butter (Unscented). My hands are really dry lately, and I have a small tube of this in my purse for midday application–it’s lovely. It sinks right into my skin without leaving my hands so greasy that they slide all over the keyboard, which is key when you spend as much time in front of a computer as I do.
  • Clarisonic Mia. I wrote about my beloved Clarisonic a few weeks ago. (Yes, I recognize my love of this tool borders on obsession.)
  • Afterglow Cosmetics Organic Mineral Foundation. I love mineral makeup, and Afterglow makes some lovely products right here in North Carolina! It comes in 20 shades and offers a natural SPF 20. (Side note–I first tested Afterglow with their starter kit, which has a small kabuki brush, mineral foundation, blush, setting powder and a concealer brush in a little makeup bag. It’s perfect for those of us beauty junkies who have commitment issues and don’t like to buy full sizes of new products.)
