Beauty Obsession: Splurge Skincare

When Christine and Kara reached out to me about their company, Splurge Skincare, I was excited. I’ve been testing a lot of facial serums and creams lately, which I LOVE, but I’d been looking forward to trying something different. Splurge’s sugar scrub and yummy lip balm definitely qualified.

What I tried: The Rub (in peppermint), $26* and Lip Buttah (in lemon), $7*

First impressions: I love the delicate scents of both the sugar scrub and the lip balm. They’re both lightly fragrant and smell delicious. Good-smelling products make me a little nervous, since I’m a lot more sensitive to synthetic fragrances than I used to be. But a check of the ingredients lists made me smile. So clean! Here they are:

The Rub (peppermint): sugar (sucrose),organic safflower oil (carthamus tinctorius), meadowfoam oil (limnanthes alba), glycerin, organic cocoa butter (theobroma cacao), organic shea butter (butyrospermum parkii), aloe vera leaf juice (aloe barbadensis), peppermint essential oil (mentha piperita), vitamin E (tocopherol)

Lip Buttah (lemon): babassu oil (orbignya oleifera), organic cocoa butter (theobroma cacao), beeswax (cera alba), sweet almond oil (prunus amygdalus dulcis), organic castor oil (ricinus communis), litsea cubeba essential oil, bitter almond essential oil (prunus amygdalus amara – prussic acid free), vitamin E (tocopherol)

I’ve been using The Rub on my elbows and heels (notoriously dry, rough spots), and I can definitely tell a difference. They’re still dry, but after about a week and a half of daily treatments, noticeably less so. I think if I keep up the routine (scrubbing both heels with a small scoop of The Rub in the shower, followed with post-shower body oil), I’ll have baby-soft heels before much longer. Big win for exfoliation!

What caught me by surprise: The shape of the Lip Buttah. It’s a sort of flattened oval shape, which I found slightly awkward at first. After using it a few times (and getting Ian to test it out, too), however, I was completely won over, and I think I actually prefer the oval shape. Plus, this balm glides on without being sticky, stays put, and is deliciously lemon-y. I can sip on water at my desk all day and not need to constantly re-apply.

Bonus: Both of these products would be great for both women and men—Ian liked the lip balm as much as I did! (Side note: I spotted what looks like tinted lip balm on Splurge Skincare’s Facebook page…and I’m hoping they’ll be ready in time for the holidays, because I think the balm would make for a fantastic gift. Hint, hint, Christine and Kara!)

What do you look for in a body scrub or lip balm? Would you give these a try? —Aleigh

Beauty obsession: Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm

True story: I’ve been using Burt’s Bees lip balm since high school. Back then, I couldn’t have cared less about whether the products I used were natural or synthetic–my beauty regimen consisted of anything I liked that was cheap, or which department store beauty counters had a gift with purchase.

If you’d handed me a tube of something and said, “Hey Aleigh! I found this great new stuff that’s supposed to shrink your thighs…but also might turn your skin a nasty shade of green,” I doubt I would’ve hesitated before slathering it on. (Thinner thighs, yes please.)

But now that I’m older (and hopefully wiser), I am starting to see how some of the decisions I made as a stupid teenager who did not appreciate her flat stomach have had an impact on my skin later on. For starters, I should’ve worn more sunscreen.

Fast forward…several…years later, and Burt’s Bees is still on heavy rotation in my beauty mix. Especially their newish tinted lip balms. I’m officially hooked.

This stuff is really great. It goes on with a hint of color, even in the reddest shade, and instantly moisturizes your pout. I’m almost always wary of lipsticks because I have really full lips, and thick glosses or lipsticks can leave me looking clownish. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of color and moisture this little balm offers without being sticky.

Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm, the details:

  • Six shades, from neutral to deep red offer a subtle hint of color
  • Ingredients include shea butter (for moisture and to protect against aging), beeswax (obviously), coconut oil and rosemary leaf oil
  • $7 each
