Link Love: Happy March!

Big thanks to everyone who has already filled out the 2013 Indigo+Canary Reader Survey! It’ll be up until March 9—I’ll randomly select a winner for the $25 Spirit Beauty Lounge gift card on March 10, and announce the winner here.

In the meantime, I have some great links to share:

There’s a good list of BPA-free canned goods and baby formula at the end of this post from EWG.

I’m loving this slideshow of two-minute tricks that boost your health from Well+Good NYC. (Dry brushing, yes!)

I really appreciate this post on No More Dirty Looks: making choices about what’s “clean enough” for you. (Reminds me a little of this post from last summer.)

I’m definitely going to make this citrus surface cleanser from Organic Authority. Look out, countertops!

Good information from Prevention: the best time of day to take your meds. (And I’d also like to test out these all-natural perfumes…)

Link Love: The Week of Love

Some love-ly links to share for the week of love!

6 Ways Kissing Makes You Stronger, from Reader’s Digest.

Hot Water + ACV = Metabolism booster? (I am already testing this one out: and it turns out hot water, even just on its own, is very soothing and energizing—helping me cut back on my mid-afternoon caffeine fix.)

Saffron Rouge has a great post about the benefits of natural mascaras. (Side note: I’m still loving my Living Nature Gentle Makeup Remover.)

The state of California is classifying BPA as a “reproductive hazard,” and I’m thrilled. But there’s more to the story…scan to the end of this page for a little nugget about why you might need to be skeptical of some “BPA-free” claims.

Jolene has a great recipe for “skin juice” a la the gorgeous Naomi Watts.

Finally, this op-ed in The New York Times is generating a lot of buzz. Here’s a snippet:

“Well, the ever-popular formaldehyde — used in nail polish, shampoo, soap and hair straighteners — frequently appears on ingredient lists (sometimes disguised as “formalin”); it’s a known carcinogen. So is dioxane, which rarely appears on labels because it’s not an intentionally added ingredient but a byproduct of manufacturing. (It’s found, for example, in bubble bath.) Some 400 hair dyes and lipsticks contain lead. (In small amounts, but you might not want to kiss your kids if you’re wearing lead-tainted lipstick.) The endocrine disrupters known as phthalates were found by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in pretty much everyone.”

Happy Friday, everyone! Hope you have plans for a fantastic weekend. —Aleigh

Link Love Friday: Tis the Season

A charming window display from the early 1940s.

I have a few more posts planned for the last few days of 2012 (including a review or two!), but posting will continue to be light at Indigo+Canary until January, while I slow down a little to celebrate the holidays and get ready to welcome 2013.

For now, I’ve collected some nuggets from around the web to share with you. Here’s what I’ve been reading+enjoying lately:

Apparently Oprah is planning to get in on the organic thing—including, potentially, beauty products. Here’s hoping she gets it so right that I stop hearing the phrase “natural cosmetics don’t work,” which I have dubbed Natural Beauty Myth #2.

3 Wreaths to Make for the Holidays, from Oh Happy Day. (How gorgeous is that kumquat and bay leaf wreath?!)

This Eco ATM seems like a pretty great idea.

The train to Versailles has been painted to match the actual Versailles, and I am really coveting a seat on it. These gorgeous photographs are making my longing to visit even worse—but aren’t they lovely?

Happy holidays, all! Hope yours are merry and bright. —Aleigh

Link Love Friday

Tomorrow is December, and I can hardly believe it. I’m terribly behind in my gift shopping this year, possibly because I’ve been working so hard on our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide. I’m planning to make up for lost time this weekend, and I hope our gift guide helps you do the same! Here’s what I’ve been reading+enjoying this week:

  • I really needed to read this great message in my friend Rosie Molinary’s newsletter yesterday: You have to teach people how to treat you.
  • Well+Good NYC has a great post about workday stress relief, and it’s perfect for this time of year: 8 Deskside Remedies for Freak-Outs at Work.
  • This post on No More Dirty Looks about the “holy grail of skincare” cracked me up! One hilarious nugget: “…let’s face it, that woman clearly has a direct line on some magical unicorn hair…”

Link Love Friday

This has not been a great week, and it’s all my fault. I know how to manage my stress levels and what I need to do to help maintain that optimistic outlook of mine, and I’ve been letting things slip. It happens to everyone, I guess. But I’m determined to get back to the positive mindset I had at the beginning of the week, and it starts with being grateful that today is Friday (instead of wishing today was Saturday). And I have some great, happy links to share, so that helps, too.
