Natural Beauty Faves: October 2011

Welcome, October! This month I’m looking forward to nights spent around the fire pit, pumpkin everything (including DIY beauty…more on that later!) and lots of yummy soups and stews. This might just be my favorite month of the year. And while we’re talking about favorites, there’s a new batch of favorite products in my sidebar! Here’s what I’m loving this month:

  • John Masters Organics Lavender Rosemary Shampoo. I’m a big fan of John Masters products, especially the hair products. This shampoo is gentle and deliciously earthy-smelling. This is what I used (along with the matching conditioner) when I transitioned to natural hair care.
  • Juice Beauty Tinted Moisturizer. This tinted moisturizer was one of the first natural products I tried. (Not a bad first choice!) I like the consistency and that it offers exactly the right amount of coverage to even out your complexion.
  • NOe Cosmetics Deep Moisturizing Night Cream. I don’t have the right skin for this night cream (my skin is too oily), so I had a friend test it. She likes that it’s lightweight but super hydrating: a good option when cooler temperatures dry out your skin.
  • Dermablend Professional makeup brushes. After test-driving Dermablend Professional’s makeup brushes, I’m a convert to synthetic bristles. Unlike animal hair brushes (which can also irritate sensitive skin), synthetic bristles are cruelty-free and more easily cleaned. They’re top quality brushes (I feel like a pro with them in my makeup bag!), and are made from recycled aluminum and black bamboo. Plus they come in a cute reusable pouch made from recycled cotton.

What are your newest favorites?

Natural Beauty Q&A: Chanee of Melongings

Chanee is a (lovely!) friend of mine who is also a talented blogger and designer–and passionate about sustainability. Her design blog, Melongings, is one of my favorites, and I covet her new line of handprinted, eco-friendly textiles. Then I discovered she also uses natural and organic products, and now I officially want to be Chanee when I grow up.

Read on to take a look at her approach to natural beauty.

Beauty Rx: Acne

This three-step routine will help you get fresh-faced, fast!

Whether you’ve struggled with acne for years or have stumbled into an uncharacteristic outbreak, acne is never fun. Your instincts may tell you to run for the harshest products you can find and wage a full-on war with your blemishes, but there are plenty of gentle-yet-strong natural and organic products that can do the job—no need to douse yourself in harsh-smelling, stinging chemicals!

Here’s a three-step routine to get your facial freak-outs under control, along with a few of my favorite acne-fighters.

Step 1: Cleanse. Clean skin is the first step to clear skin. Be sure to wash your face at night (I don’t recommend sleeping in your makeup, even if it’s organic!), and in the morning before you put any other products on your face. Lately I’ve been using the Marigold cleanser from Hollybeth Natural Luxury–it works well with my Clarisonic Mia, but is just as good when I wash my face with my hands. Exfoliation is important, so if you’re not using a brush like the Clarisonic, try a cleanser with built-in exfoliation like this one from Dr. Hauschka.
