Beauty Obsession: Nordic Naturals

When I interviewed Julie Ebner for this story on how to get glossy hair, I took several pieces of her advice to heart. Her final tip was her “hair prescription,” in which she encouraged readers to take an Omega-3 supplement, which is great for skin and hair. The last time I saw my physician, she agreed—and so, with my doctor’s stamp of approval, I decided to try it.

What I tried: Nordic Naturals’ Omega Woman, Evening Primrose Oil Blend* ($24.95 for 120 capsules).

First impressions: Even though these capsules contain fish oil (the typical ingredient in omega-3 vitamins), they don’t smell fishy. In fact, they smell slightly lemony and like roses.

What caught me by surprise: I’ve noticed over the past year or so that I’ve been shedding a lot more of my hair and it didn’t seem like my hair was growing enough to keep up with the shedding…which was, frankly, starting to concern me. And so my reason for wanting to try these supplements was pretty much vanity-related—I knew they were recommended to balance hormone levels (I know changing hormone levels sometimes cause hair loss), and Julie said they were good for shiny hair. I’ve been taking them every day since the beginning of the year, and you guys, I can actually tell a difference in my hair. I’m still shedding, but I can tell my head is magically growing new hair, because when I pull my hair back into a ponytail I have a ton of short, wispy baby hairs that stick basically straight out of my head—and my ponytail is thicker. Vitamins! They work.

Bonus: Nordic Naturals is hosting a What’s Essential contest—first prize is a trip for two to California (and a year’s supply of supplements)! Find details here.

Link Love: The Monday Edition

Last week while I was at Target to get a birthday card for a friend, I discovered that the aisle that used to contain natural cosmetics (and the sort-of natural cosmetics) is completely gone. My local Target doesn’t have so much as a single Burt’s Bees lip balm right now. I shop in many places for natural products, and Target was never my go-to because most of the “natural” products on the shelf weren’t natural enough to pass muster with me, but I appreciated that someone who was new to using natural products might stumble upon that aisle, realize there is such a thing as a natural shampoo or body oil, and do some investigating…a sort of mainstream gateway to researching the ingredients in his or her cosmetics. And now that it’s gone, I’m surprisingly sad! No more Shea Moisture body oil from Target for me.

Here are my favorite links of the week:

Natural Beauty Faves: January 2012

It’s taking me a while to get adjusted to the fact that 2012 is really here, but I have some big plans. First up, a new email newsletter! I’m not planning to launch it for a few weeks yet, but if you’re interested in the newsletter-only goodies I have planned, you can go ahead and sign up here. Here are the products I’m loving this month:

  • Florere Deodorant Cream. I raved about this stuff a little while ago and I’m still loving it. My mom and sister both took it for a whirl while I was in Pittsburgh over the holidays, and I think they were both impressed.
  • Hydrea London FSC Certified Classic Long Handle Body Brush. This was a Christmas present from my Aunt Jackie (thank you!). I’d been meaning to try the dry brushing technique I’ve been reading so much about, and so far I’m liking it but it’s too soon to tell much of a difference aside from feeling really invigorated. More on this brush (and the technique) soon…
  • Broo Shampoo & Conditioner. I just discovered this craft beer body care and shampoo line (it’s straight from Asheville, one of my hometowns), and so far I really like it. It’s not cheap, but the shampoo is so foamy that I really only need a tiny amount, and it’s super moisturizing. Look for a full review of this little hoppy duo soon!
  • 100% Pure Red Wine Resveratrol Eye Cream. I bought this at Ecolicious when I bought the Florere Deodorant Cream. With my (genetic) dark undereye circles, I’m always on the hunt for a new eye cream to try, and I really think the price is affordable for a quality eye cream, especially for such a large container. Plus, in addition to resveratrol (the age-defying substance in red wine grapes), it has hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and tons of antioxidants.
