Natural Beauty Faves: January 2012

It’s taking me a while to get adjusted to the fact that 2012 is really here, but I have some big plans. First up, a new email newsletter! I’m not planning to launch it for a few weeks yet, but if you’re interested in the newsletter-only goodies I have planned, you can go ahead and sign up here. Here are the products I’m loving this month:

  • Florere Deodorant Cream. I raved about this stuff a little while ago and I’m still loving it. My mom and sister both took it for a whirl while I was in Pittsburgh over the holidays, and I think they were both impressed.
  • Hydrea London FSC Certified Classic Long Handle Body Brush. This was a Christmas present from my Aunt Jackie (thank you!). I’d been meaning to try the dry brushing technique I’ve been reading so much about, and so far I’m liking it but it’s too soon to tell much of a difference aside from feeling really invigorated. More on this brush (and the technique) soon…
  • Broo Shampoo & Conditioner. I just discovered this craft beer body care and shampoo line (it’s straight from Asheville, one of my hometowns), and so far I really like it. It’s not cheap, but the shampoo is so foamy that I really only need a tiny amount, and it’s super moisturizing. Look for a full review of this little hoppy duo soon!
  • 100% Pure Red Wine Resveratrol Eye Cream. I bought this at Ecolicious when I bought the Florere Deodorant Cream. With my (genetic) dark undereye circles, I’m always on the hunt for a new eye cream to try, and I really think the price is affordable for a quality eye cream, especially for such a large container. Plus, in addition to resveratrol (the age-defying substance in red wine grapes), it has hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and tons of antioxidants.

Beauty Obsession: Florere Deodorant Cream

I finally made a visit to my (awesome) neighborhood’s newest shop, Ecolicious, this weekend. My favorite purchase so far? My new Florere Deodorant Cream. Don’t let anyone tell you that organic or natural cosmetics don’t work, people. This stuff is the real deal.

What I tried: Florere Deodorant Cream ($8.50 online, $6 in-store at Ecolicious). Originally, I picked up the stick formula, but Marley (co-owner of the shop, with business partner Fiona) suggested I try the cream in a jar instead, because she prefers it. I’m really glad she did, because although I was initially a little wary of deodorant from a jar (how much do I need to use? how exactly do I apply this stuff?), so far I am loving it. This could turn out to be one of those life-changing purchases that I wish I’d tried years ago.

First impressions: At first, I was a little intimidated with deodorant cream that didn’t come in a stick form, but I really shouldn’t have been—using this stuff is really easy. Here’s what you do: use the spoon that comes with the jar to spoon out a nickel-sized amount (plenty for both underarms) and warm it in your hands until it’s nice and smooth. With your fingers, rub the deodorant into your underarms. Rub any remaining cream into your hands. Just make sure you either wash your hands before doing your makeup or put your deodorant on after you put on your makeup.

What caught me by surprise: How well it worked. This stuff is AWESOME. It smells a little like lavender and sage (but the scent is not strong). No sweatiness, no stinkiness, even after an entire day of activity. Plus, it’s really moisturizing, which is a nice change from the over-drying conventional deodorants I’ve used and the still-sweaty feeling I had when I used Tom’s of Maine antiperspirant, which isn’t as pure as I would like anyway. Plus, the cream is vegan, with no aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens, or petroleum by-products.

Bonus: My little jar is going to last me a lot longer than a stick of regular deodorant, so it’s a money-saver, too. And the jar is glass, so I can toss it in the recycling bin when I’ve used it all up.

So, what do you think? Will you give deodorant cream a try? —Aleigh
