On the hunt: Eye brightener pencil

A few years ago, I was introduced to the joys of using a skin tone-matching eyeliner on the inside of my lower eyelashes. Before then, I’d stayed away from any kind of eyeliner on my lower lash line, because it always seemed to make my dreaded undereye circles (the inherited kind that no amount of sleep can fix) look even darker. But my little taupe eyeliner pencil was kind of life-changing—until I discovered cosmetics ingredients lists and swore off parabens (the eye pencil I used contains both methylparaben and propylparaben). (Side note: Some people call this shade “nude,” but as we all have different colors of skin—and therefore different shades of “nude”—I’m hesitant to call one color the shade of skin tone across the board!)

Ever since, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect natural or organic version of this little eye-brightener. Sadly, my search has been unsuccessful. Here’s what I’ve come across so far.

There’s this eyeliner duo from Dr. Hauschka ($28.90), which would be close to perfect…except I’m looking for a taupe, more tan shade—not a stark white liner.

Then there’s the Tarte Inner Rim Brightener ($18), which would be perfect if I could get over the fact that it contains retinyl palmitate. It’s light years better than the parabens in my previously-beloved liner, but still not perfect because of that blemish on its ingredients list. I may have to make a compromise and go with this option, simply because it’s the cleanest one I’ve found.

I’m also considering testing out this gold eyeliner from Logona ($12.50). It’s still not exactly what I’m looking for (gold instead of taupe), but I think even if it doesn’t work for my lower lash line, it will be pretty with my Warm Inside holiday collection from Alima Pure.

So I’m asking you: Do you use a skin tone-matching eyeliner on your lower lashes? Have you discovered a natural option that you love? Do tell! —Aleigh
