Natural Beauty Review: Kosas Cosmetics

Kosas Cosmetics review Indigo and Canary

I’ve written about lipstick on Indigo + Canary many times, but here’s a quick recap: It’s a tough product for me. I have super full lips and often feel like wearing lipstick makes me look clownish. But as I’ve gotten older (and, perhaps, my lips have gotten a little thinner?), I have started to feel like lipstick is the thing that makes me look — and feel! — pulled together. When I’m wearing lipstick, I’m doing the #adulting thing. I feel like a grownup. However, this whole uncertainty about lipstick has a side effect: It also makes me extremely picky. If a lipstick is too drying, it gets tossed. If it doesn’t have the staying power to last through a morning meeting, out it goes. (Side note: As the mother of a toddler, purging things from my home has become a big part of my self-care. Getting rid of stuff feels so good.)

Well, guess what, friends?! I had the chance to take four shades* from Koras Cosmetics out for a test drive, and I’m kind of in love. Read on for the full review!

The scoop on Kosas Cosmetics lipstick

These sleek little lipsticks cost $24 each, are made by hand in Los Angeles, and I lovelovelove that they were created to complement all skin tones. The small-but-mighty collection of lippies comes in flattering shades, and — this is for real — I can easily wear all four shades they sent me. Truth! Even though my skin tone, which is fairly pale with green and yellow undertones, is a pretty challenging one.

Each shade is buildable and has a non-drying matte finish, thanks to rosehip seed, green tea, grape seed, and jojoba oils, plus other goodies like mango seed butter and shea butter. (Note: These are not vegan formulas.) One swipe is plenty for daytime, but add a few more swipes and BAM, date night-ready. And, bonus: That sleek packaging is fab!

Kosas Cosmetics

Stardust: This is my current go-to. It’s been in my purse for weeks, and it goes with everything. It’s a sheer neutral shade that reads like a neutral on my lips but builds into a deeper blush shade. So far I haven’t found a makeup look or outfit this hasn’t paired with beautifully.

Thrillest: I realize this is not news, but finding the perfect red shade is really hard. The struggle is real! (I do have to say that considering the state of the world these days, struggling to find a perfect red lipstick is a decidedly first-world problem, no? Sigh.) Anyway, this little tube is the perfect shade of orange-y red. I haven’t loved a red lipstick this much since I discovered Revolution Organics gloss in Freedom red. That’s a win!

Electra: This raspberry shade is great for when you’re feeling a bit dramatic. Pairs well with a glass of Pinot Noir and a pair of oxblood pants, especially in the fall. There’s no subtlety here — it’s best for a makeup look that emphasizes your pout! royal4Royal: This plummy shade is on the purple end of the spectrum, again with the full-coverage color (think: bold!). I feel like Chrissy Teigen when I wear this one: unapologetic, outspoken, and smart.

Which Kosas Cosmetics shade would you try? Have you found the perfect red lipstick? Share in the comments — I want to try, too!

I also have full lips and finding the right lipstick is a real nightmare. I usually wear pale shades. I would love to try these red ones, especially the plummy shade.
