Natural Beauty Q&A: Sara Davoodi of Athar’a

I’m thrilled to share a Natural Beauty Q&A with Sara Davoodi today. Not only is Sara lovely (she is not wearing any makeup in that photo on the left, by the way), she’s also a lovely person, and her products were my first introduction to Ayurvedic skincare. Her company, Athar’a, makes products that are natural, organic, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Read on for Sara’s beauty philosophy, how Ayurveda influences her approach to skincare, and the two Athar’a products she recommends for newbies to Ayurveda and Athar’a products.

When did you start using natural cosmetics, and what drew you to them? I was introduced to natural skincare when I was just a little girl! My South Asian grandmother, Athar, (yes, Athar’a is named after her; it means Pure) came from overseas to live with us in Chicago and she used to always tell me that not much is needed to keep your skin and hair beautiful, she was living the natural, holistic lifestyle, right here in the states, far before it became mainstream. I learned how to make my own natural homemade skincare products from her and never used too much makeup anyhow. When I did start wearing makeup in college, I started with a natural mineral powder (which is still the most I’ll wear today), and kept a simple skincare routine incorporating a lot of natural ingredients, which I believe helped keep my complexion clear.

Your beauty philosophy: I truly believe that real natural beauty starts from within.  Inner peace, mind-body balance, and making healthy diet and lifestyle choices will impact the way you look and feel. But I also believe that giving back positive energy; expressing love and gratitude is much more beautiful than any level of outward physical appearance.

How does Ayurveda influence your approach to skincare?
I think that beauty in the physical sense should be approached holistically and that’s why I have incorporated ancient Ayurveda principles into my skincare line. Ayurveda is all about creating a peaceful, harmonious balance between mind, body, spirit, senses and emotions—I know that in order for your skin to be at its optimal stage you need the overall wellness and balance that comes from eating nutritiously and making healthy lifestyle choices. Athar’a includes ingredients used by Ayurvedic practitioners and Ayurveda followers for centuries—pure, plant-based ingredients that provide healing, therapeutic, and sometimes even medicinal benefits to deliver real results.

What’s the one product you’d recommend to someone who is trying Athar’a products for the first time? That’s a tough one, because it really depends on the individual’s personal needs, Dosha*, and skin type (and because I love them all)! I would choose the Moroccan Glow Detoxifying Face Mask coupled with our Superfruit & Jasmine Antioxidant Face Cream.

The vegan, mineral face mask is made with Rhassoul (Moroccan Red Clay), Turmeric, and Kaolin. It cleans deep into your pores and draws out impurities, shrinking acne and fading dark spots, while the Superfuit & Jasmine Antioxidant Face Cream provides hydration and nourishment, while fighting aging, fading dark spots, and brightening skin tone with pure Acai, Pomegranate, and Moroccan Argan Oil.

I would recommend detoxifying and purifying your skin with Moroccan Glow Detoxifying Face Mask first and the following it with the Superfruit & Jasmine Antioxidant Face Cream. Both products are good for all skin type and Doshas.

If you could go back in time and give yourself advice on trying makeup and cosmetics for the first time, what would you say? Even though I’ve always primarily used more natural products, I wasn’t aware of some of the hidden chemicals in some products that say they are natural. I wish I would have been more careful in reading the ingredients and educating myself on what’s in those so-called natural products before putting them on my skin.

What one bad beauty habit do you encourage women to break?
Going to sleep with your makeup on! It’s a terrible habit that clogs pores and causes breakouts, plus night time is the best time to nourish your skin, so you’re missing a huge window of opportunity to improve your skin by cleansing, toning and moisturizing to prevent aging and instead potentially damaging it by clogging it with dirt and makeup.

*Dosha is the Ayurvedic mind-body constitution. Look for an Ayurveda Dosha quiz on the Athar’a site soon so you can assess which type you are!
