Beauty Obsession: Vapour Organic’s Illusionist

A look I cannot pull off: the smoky eye.

It seems like I’m always complaining about the dark circles under my eyes, but they’re truly my very own personal Enemy No. 1. They’re genetic (thanks, Grandpa), they’re purplish-blue, and they’re here to stay.

Even if I am perfectly rested and hydrated, if I don’t pile on the concealer, I constantly hear the same refrain from my co-workers, people I run into during the workday or weekend, etc.: “You look so tired!” “Are you getting enough sleep?” “You must be working so hard!”

Truth: I might be tired. I might not be getting enough sleep. I definitely do work very hard.

But when I’m feeling happy and refreshed, not tired, and not overworked, the absolute last thing I want to hear is someone commenting on the fact that I absolutely do not look as if I am feeling any of those things.

So. Before I discovered natural beauty, I spent years on the hunt for the perfect concealer. It was like searching for the holy grail—except I think in this case, the holy grail is actually an eye cream that makes them disappear entirely! (That search is ongoing as well.)

I never found the one, but I did settle on a combination of concealers, which I varied depending on whether I paired one with liquid foundation, tinted moisturizer, or mineral makeup. Now that I’m firmly in the natural and organic beauty camp, the hunt is on all over again. I blogged about my last discovery a while ago, and now I’m ready to share my latest find in this epic battle to defeat my dark undereye circles. Read on for my review!

What I tried: Vapour Organic Beauty Illusionist concealer (020 shade), $22

First impressions: I have used Vapour’s Atmosphere Luminous Foundation for a while, but I usually save it for special days when I need a foundation with a bit more staying power. I decided to try Illusionist because I love the way the foundation warms on my fingers and smooths easily across my skin—plus I like that it stays put and looks good all day. Illusionist has the same qualities. It doesn’t offer as much coverage as some of the other concealers I’ve tried—it’s a bit more sheer—but that means it doesn’t look fake. (No risk of the too-much-concealer look.)

What caught me by surprise: It’s versatile. I’d originally planned to use it only underneath my eyes, but in the few weeks I’ve been using it, I’ve also tried it on blemishes, to help even out my skin tone (around my nose in particular), and even on my lids. It makes for a great base for eyeshadow, too. One of the big pluses of this concealer in particular (for me) is that it promises not to settle into creases and fine lines—and I definitely found that to be true.

Bonus: Like all Vapour products, this one is supremely natural. And because it contains sunflower oil, castor seed oil, and Vitamin E, it’s really moisturizing, too. It’s like an eye cream that also helps hide the dark circles. Win.

What’s your biggest beauty woe? —Aleigh

Just from all of the shopping and product reviewing we did together, I STILL keep an eye out for good under eye cream and concealer that you might like. It’s burned into my subconscious. (ha!)

Mine (and you know this) is also a genetic “gift” — my double chin. Hate it, have always hated it, I’ve had it at a size 10 and a size 16 (I’m somewhere in the middle of that now). Besides my “A-E-I-O-U” face exercises I do in the shower, I have two products I like to firm and tighten and ensure my double chin doesn’t turn into a full-on turkey wattle. I don’t think either one is organic, but I use Bliss’s Thinny Thin Chin on my neck AND under my eyes if I’m having a particularly puffy eye morning. It’s not meant for under eye, but I figured if it tightens the skin on my neck, it should work for under eye puffiness (it does). It works instantly (you can feel it tighten) and over time (it has good stuff to firm long-term). I use it in the a.m. and let it sink in before applying mineral makeup.

The other product is a special occasion one, Peter Thomas Roth’s Instant Firmx. I got it as a sample from Sephora a while back and it totally works, but I don’t like it for everyday use. It has serious instant firming effects; if you use it over your whole face and chin you can literally see the tightening. The reason I only use it on special occasions is that, once it dries, there is a slightly whitish film that has to stay in order for the product to work, so I need more makeup than I usually apply. But it does give me flawless and younger looking skin! I don’t know what’s in it – could probably do the same with egg whites.
