Fangirl Alert: Osmia Organics (+ a giveaway!)

Sarah Villafranco of Osmia Organics

A few weeks ago, Sarah Villafranco emailed to tell me about her natural product line, Osmia Organics.

She started her company after spending six years in emergency medicine. Even though she liked her job and was good at it, she felt unfulfilled—but a conversation with her college roommate helped bring a new goal into focus. She’d always been obsessed with what her husband calls “lotions and potions” (an obsession I can definitely understand) and she decided to try to make them herself. She enrolled in a soap-making class. She re-discovered her love of chemistry. She spent two more years working in emergency medicine, but otherwise shuttered in her lab, fretting over emulsifiers. (While also juggling being a wife and parent to two little girls.)

Now, a few years later, Sarah is dedicated to Osmia Organics full time. As I scoped out her website, I noticed that she lives in Carbondale, Colorado—not far from Basalt, where I spent a few college summers. It’s a place I often think about, and it’s not a stretch to say that living there, in a few small ways, helped me start on the path to discovering natural products. And her products are extremely natural, so I was excited to test one out.

You guys, she sent me practically her entire product line. And here’s the thing: I can’t pick a favorite one to review. I honestly, truly adore every single thing I tried. So instead of my typical beauty obsession post, I’m going full-on fangirl when it comes to Osmia, with mini-reviews of everything she sent.

Read on for my roundup of mini-reviews, and details about a generous giveaway from Sarah!

Black Clay Facial Soap, $22

I’m normally not a fan of facial soaps because they tend to dry out my skin and leave it feeling uncomfortably tight. This black clay facial soap is an exception. It lathers nicely, feels extremely gentle, and has great purifying ingredients like black australian clay and dead sea mud plus soothing organic almond, avocado, and castor bean oils.

Aspen Walnut Micro Scrub, $26

This might just be the best exfoliating scrub I’ve tried. With finely ground organic walnut hulls, it exfoliates extremely gently without feeling harsh and scratchy. I brought this with me on my whirlwind trip to Milwaukee a few weeks back, and it brightened my travel-dulled skin right up. Plus, it felt like a little spa day in my hotel room. Sarah recommends using it once a week or so, and now I always look forward to “scrub day.”

Active Gel Nutrient Serum, $55

Made for all skin types, this nourishing gel feels so good when you apply it (just after cleansing but before moisturizing). It has hyaluronic acid to seal in your skin’s moisture. A little of this stuff goes a long way, and in just a few weeks, I have noticed a big improvement in the texture of my skin. It’s true that I’ve been using many Osmia products, but I give this little gel a lot of the credit.

Facial Calibration Serum, $50

Facial oils are amazing (for all skin types!), and this luxe little serum is no exception. Just one pump is plenty to cover my entire face and neck, and it’s packed with oils my skin loves: kukui oil, safflower oil, macadamia nut oil, rosehip seed oil, grapeseed oil, shea oil, acai oil, black seed oil, and more. It makes my skin glow.

Purely Simple Face Cream, $60

I have a love/hate relationships with face creams and moisturizers. They feel so great going on, but usually they’re too heavy for my already-a-bit-oily skin. Sarah sent me this light face cream for that reason (she also has a lovely moisturizer for dry complexions), and I am completely surprised about how much I love it. When I use it in the morning, my face isn’t a gross grease-fest at the end of the day, which is what usually happens when I moisturize. Plus, I’m not sure how it’s possible, but I can double up on this cream plus the Active Gel Nutrient Serum and still not emerge as a greaseball. Win.

Body Oil: Stream, $20

Once I discovered the joys of facial oils, it wasn’t long before I decided to try body oils, too. Well, I adore them, and Sarah’s body oil is unique. It’s a light orange color (although it goes on clear), and contains fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, kukui oil, sweet almond oil, rosehip seed oil, hemp seed oil, avocado oil, borage seed oil, evening primrose oil, and more. Supremely moisturizing, it sinks into the dry skin on my legs, feet, and elbows much faster than other oils I’ve tried. I want to try them all.

Honey-Myrrh Lip Repair, $20

This little jar was a life-saver. After coming back from Milwaukee, my skin, especially my lips, was pretty dry from multiple plane rides in the span of three days. My lips were pretty cracked…but after one night’s sleep with Sarah’s lip repair slathered on my pout, my lips were soothed. It was pretty amazing, and it even convinced my husband to try it. (A rare event, indeed.)

Luster, $15

I have a lip gloss problem. Right now there are about seven tubes in my purse…and plenty more in my bathroom. Luster is the one I reach for when I need moisture and color. It looks good on everyone (I forced a few friends to try it!), and it’s moisturizing without the dreaded stickiness that can quickly ruin a lip gloss experience. It leaves behind a subtle stain, too, so even if you forget to re-apply, the color remains.

But here’s the best part: Sarah has generously offered to give one lucky Indigo+Canary reader the Osmia Organics product of her (or his) choice!

Here’s how to enter to win: Visit the Osmia Organics site, find a product you’d love to try, then come back here and leave a comment on this post. Use the box below to follow Osmia Organics and Indigo+Canary on Twitter, “like” us on Facebook, and tweet about the giveaway for extra entries. We’ll accept entries until next Thursday at midnight, and announce the winner a week from today. (U.S. residents only.)

Good luck!  —Aleigh

I’m always in search of a light face cream. My skin gets too dry without moisture, too oily with moisture! Sounds like the simple face cream is a win-win!

I am caught between Cedar Smoke and Juniper Fire Oils. I am pretty sure that the Cedar Smoke is quasi-addictive. Just the loveliest smell you can imagine!

Oh man! Her products look so beautiful and luxurious. I am always on the lookout for completely natural brands that maintain that wonderful artisan, hand-crafted feel. I’m torn between the Facial Calibration Serum and the Spot Treatment. I’m sure if I was chosen as the winner I could make a decision though!
