What kind of mattress do you sleep on?

I know that beauty sleep is important—but lately, I haven’t been getting enough of it. The mattress in my bedroom right now is a ten-year-old double pillowtop, and has permanent body-shaped impressions where we sleep. Not a recipe for a good night’s sleep, that’s for sure!

We need a new mattress, so my husband and I spent much of our Memorial Day looking for a one. But after reading about how much off-gassing comes from the petrochemicals in most mattresses (and dust mites, ick!), I was concerned about materials. And I absolutely wanted to lie down on a mattress before committing to one (which meant no online shopping).

Luckily, our first stop of the day was Dilworth Mattress Factory, a company that builds mattresses right in the heart of Charlotte’s awesome South End neighborhood. The owner, Alan, completely understood my concerns, and directed us to his latex rubber mattresses, made with 90% natural latex foam. (Side note: Apparently latex mattresses have been around since the 1950s. Who knew?)

Although we did go check out several other mattress stores that day, after hanging out with Alan for a while, we were sold. The natural latex mattress feels like a super-supportive memory foam mattress (extremely comfortable and cooler than your typical memory foam mattress), plus it’ll last for 20 years, as opposed to the 10 years our innerspring mattress has lasted. Latex is also anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and dust mite-resistant. Bonus!

We chose the My Blue Heaven model, which has an organic cotton cover. It’ll take two weeks for Alan to make the mattress for us, but I’m super excited to support a local, family-owned business—and get a mattress that I feel good about sleeping on.

Are you in the market for a new mattress? If you have a latex mattress, how is it holding up? I’m interested, really! —Aleigh

I love sleep… Perhaps a little too much. Up until last year we were sleeping on the mattress my husband had from high school, so we went all out and got a Tempur-Pedic (from my home state of Kentucky). Did not know about the latex alternative but I love our mattress! A good mattress makes all the difference. Can’t wait to hear how you like yours!
