Do you subscribe to Birchbox?

This month's Birchbox.

Monthly beauty samples subscriptions are all the rage right now, and luckily for me, a good friend got be a Birchbox subscription for my birthday back in March. (I have the best friends!) I was super excited to see that Birchbox has a natural and organic cosmetics selection, and I’ve been eagerly anticipating my monthly samples ever since.

So far, it’s been an interesting experience.

My first box was a disappointment—a bottle of perfume arrived shattered (and a tweet to Birchbox received no response). The other products were mostly faux natural, containing some natural ingredients but also some icky ones that I try to avoid. My second box arrived on Friday, and was a bigger success: a yummy tea sample, a mini lipstick from Vapour Organic Beauty (one of my favorite brands!), and a salt scrub from dirt (a new-to-me brand).

The other samples included ingredients I try to stay away from: the infamous “parfum” ingredient, plus phenoxyethanol, which I will sometimes compromise on, but not if the ingredients list also include things like PEG-150 and methylchloroisothiazolinone.  (There are plenty of great, natural products on the market that don’t include these ingredients.)

On the whole, however, I’m mostly pleased with the natural brands Birchbox partners with—and I hope to see more truly natural products in my box next month! I’m always sure to fill out the feedback surveys to help prove there’s a market for natural products.

But, I’m curious: Do you have a Birchbox description? What has your experience been like?

Please share! I’d love to know what my other natural beauty junkies think of their boxes! —Aleigh

I waited for about 6 months after I first discovered Birchbox to subscribe, and the primary reason was because they didn’t initially have a lot of organic product partnerships. As soon as I saw their focus on natural products expand, I signed up! Like you, my boxes are “mostly” organic stuff and I’ve discovered a lot of new products (Juice Beauty’s acne facial wash is a top favorite of mine now because I got it as a multi-use sample in my first box). Also love Vapour! According to the beauty profile I filled out, my products will be “mostly” organic (but no guarantee). This month’s box has a really pretty Zoya nail polish and Pangea organics night time face lotion. Love both! I hope to see more organic products every month.

I do like Birchbox for its “monthly beauty surprises” – I love getting the email every month telling me that my box has shipped and waiting for it to arrive!

I’m currently subscribed to Goodebox and Green Grab Bag. I wanted ones that were just cosmetics and skincare. I considered Birchbox, but I’m only interested in trying out organic, clean products. Hope this helps! :)

    Hi Aleigh,
I was approached by Birch Box. While I love the concept it is extremely (and I mean extremely) expensive for companies like my self to participate. They not only want free product they want you to pay them to give it away. Most really natural companies are small like myself and can’t afford these types of things. I love bloggers and if you’ve got a great following of other naturally savvy ladies I suggest you, and you other blogger friends, just reach out to companies directly and ask to review products. While we can’t always give away product to everyone, especially if your following is still small, we can sometimes do a buy one get one or a significant discount to help make it affordable. Keep up the great blogging! Kim, Owner Good For You Girls skin care

Thanks for the info and the comment, Kim! I hear you on the expense–assumed it was pretty expensive to participate. I was hoping that my subscription would introduce me to some natural cosmetics companies I didn’t know about, but based on your comment here, it seems like only the larger, more established brands would be able to afford to participate. —Aleigh

I’m new to your blog & enjoying reading all the entries in reverse order. Thank you for having an archive, so many blogs are without. I subscribed to Birchbox for over a year until recently, when I decided to get serious on my going green journey. So I canceled my subscription in lieu of Goodebox… can’t wait to receive my first box this month. Birchbox offered a mix of products, though I preferred Ipsy because they offered 5-6 full size options for $10/month.

Thanks! I’ve subscribed to Birchbox for a few months now and really like it. Products meet my criteria for the most part, and there are lots of small new brands included–which I love.
