Pro tip: Oil for a healthy scalp

A few weeks ago I shared Julie Ebner’s DIY recipe for shiny hair. Luckily for me (and you!), Julie gave me another tip worth sharing: a technique to help keep your scalp healthy. Our scalps are very important—and largely ignored. Did you know the scalp is responsible for the volume of your hair and determines how shiny it is? Read on for Julie’s scalp-soothing technique.

What you need:

  • High-quality sesame, olive or jojoba oil
  • Your hands

To do: Put a few drops on your scalp. Massage the oil into your scalp and pull it through your hair. Leave the oil on all day (you can work out, run errands, etc., although you probably don’t want to have your picture taken!), or leave it in overnight and put a towel on your pillow to absorb the oil. To wash out, put shampoo right on the oil (don’t wet your hair first), rinse. Shampoo again.

Think your hair is too oily for this treatment? Think again. “People are going to say, ‘My hair is so oily,’ but in the long run, [this technique] will rebalance the oil in your hair,” says Julie.

Bottom line: Without a healthy scalp, it’s really hard to have shiny, healthy hair. Will you give this scalp treatment a try? —Aleigh
