Show Your Body Some Love

Today is the National Organization for Women’s Love Your Body Day, and I’m stepping up on my soapbox for a moment to encourage you to celebrate.

It may seem strange for a blog that’s all about (natural) beauty to participate in a celebration of healthy body image when the image industry seems to be all about superficial and completely unattainable depictions of beauty, but hear me out. I know there are plenty of feminists who will disagree with me about this, but I believe you can wear (and love) makeup and taking care of your skin–and also be a feminist. Especially when you seek out natural products that have benefits beyond the superficial.

Here’s a little piece of my philosophy (you can find the whole thing here):

I believe that natural beauty is part of being healthy. Period. Seeking to be healthier and feel better is partially what made me fall in love with natural beauty in the first place, and I think that concept—that beauty products should be about more than just beauty—is easily lost.

At Indigo+Canary, we talk about the importance of taking care of yourself. We talk about how it’s important to care for the environment and all of the creatures in it. We even talk about going all natural. And we talk about why we’re passionate about natural beauty.

So. Today I encourage you to find a way to show your body some love:

  • Take a soothing bath: It feels great and it’s good for stress relief.
  • Set the DVR to record your must-see shows and head to bed a few hours early so you’ll wake up feeling (and looking) refreshed tomorrow.
  • Pamper yourself: Try out a new natural facial mask, soak your feet, take a yoga class.
  • Or make your celebration a reason to examine the products in your makeup/skincare routine and toss the ones that have ingredients that could be harmful. (Bella Floria has a good list of ingredients to avoid.)

Find a way to thank your body for being good to you. And if you’re willing to share, I’d love to hear how you celebrated. —Aleigh
